Bodyshop “David” Triumphs Over Progressive “Goliath” in Court — Shop Owner Tells Story on Scene Genesis Podcast

Market Wire, August, 2008

Bodyshop owner Greg Coccaro tells the
riveting story of how he successfully defended himself against fraud
charges leveled against him by giant Progressive Insurance in a new podcast
from Scene Genesis.

The podcast can be heard on www.scenegenesis.com . Click on About US/Press
Room/Podcasts.

Coccaro, owner of North State Custom Auto in West Chester County, New York,
triumphed when a New York Supreme Court judge tossed out Progressive’s case
this month.

The story has important implications for insurers, bodyshops and consumers
who trust their insurer to choose a bodyshop that will do safe,
high-quality repairs — something that doesn’t always happen, Coccaro says.

The victory cost Coccaro $400,000 in legal fees over three years. His suit
against Progressive is pending.

This is the latest of “Topics in Ten,” Scene Genesis’ monthly podcast that
brings opinions and ideas to the collision-repair industry.

Hydraulics is also the reason why we see cars being lifted in service centers so that technicians can work beneath them.

It is also because of this same technique that elevators operate. Airplane surfaces are operated and controlled by hydraulics, and even the brakes in our cars use hydraulics.

The idea behind hydraulic systems is simple. It states that force applied at a point gets transmitted to the next point with the use of an incompressible fluid, which is usually a type of oil. In the process, the force is being multiplied.

In a simple hydraulic system, two pistons are connected by a pipe which is filled by oil. These pistons are installed into two glass cylinders which are filled with oil. The glass cylinders are then connected to each other by a pipe filled with oil.

When force is applied to one piston, the force is transferred to the next piston through the oil in the pipe. Because oil cannot be compressed, the efficiency is very good because all of the force applied shows in the second piston.

The pipe which connects the cylinders can also come in any length, shape and size, so it can bend, twist, or turn through all the things separating the two pistons.

BIG 5-0, BIG DEAL

WHEN I spotted a story claiming an extra million Britons aged over 50 had gone online for the first time in the past year, I thought: “So what?” When the next line of the story claimed “silver surfers” (!) were becoming more confident about using the internet, I nearly choked on my sherry.

Who writes these things? A huge number of the over-50s are still bringing up young children and managing demanding careers.

To insinuate once you hit the big 5-0, your biggest concerns are renewing your Saga magazine subscription and making sure the Grecian 2000 hasn’t run out is a ridiculously outdated view.

Haven’t they seen a recent picture of gorgeous Sharon Stone (left), a 52-year-old mum of three children aged under 10? I doubt she’ll be buying her stair-lift online just yet.

‘No excuse for schools having bad teachers’

WHEN I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me …

Don’t be a journalist, the pay’s rubbish. How about a career in law? Well, I didn’t take her advice and I clung to my dreams of a career in writing in the hope of becoming the next Charlotte Bronte.

That was until at the age of 12, when I had the misfortune to meet my secondary school teacher Mrs Harrison.

foul In one week, she managed to shatter my dreams and, at the time, I believed she had turned me off writing forever. Mrs destroyed childhood In a one-off event, my school ran a newspaper for a week and Mrs Harrison, who had a unsurprising resemblance to Cruella De Vil, appointed herself the editor. dreams As I proudly rushed to get a copy of the paper to read my first article – about a war veteran who had won an award – my dreams were shattered.

It appeared in the paper with spelling mistakes, incorrect facts and had been totally rewritten by Mrs Harrison. It didn’t make sense – but it still had my name above it.

After fighting my way past my jeering peers, who were ripping shreds off me about the atrocious article, I found Mrs Harrison and angrily pointed out that she should have put her own name on the embarrassing, illiterate piece.

To which she told me I’d never make it as a writer if I couldn’t take criticism and have my work rewritten.

In one foul swoop, Mrs Harrison destroyed my childhood dreams and knocked my confidence.

It wasn’t until watching the film Dead Poet’s Society, years later, that I was inspired to give writing another crack
